COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Astrophysics BSc, students explore core physics and mathematics while being introduced to astrophysics and computational skills. This foundation year covers topics such as mechanics, matter, electricity, magnetism, waves and experimental physics, alongside modules in planetary science and mathematical methods, helping students gain a strong grounding before specialising further. At the end of the year, there is flexibility to switch to another physics or astronomy degree if desired. During the second year, students deepen their understanding of quantum mechanics, thermal and statistical physics, optics, programming, and condensed matter, while a major 20-credit module in observational techniques prepares them for real astronomical data collection and analysis. The course also introduces astrophysical themes such as stars and planets and real-world problem-solving. In the final year, students complete a 30-credit independent project using real research data and study advanced topics including cosmology, particle physics, galaxy evolution, high-energy astrophysics and atomic and nuclear physics. They also choose optional modules such as solid state physics, computational physics, science communication or environmental physics, enabling them to tailor their studies to future career or research goals.
