COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the three years of the BSc Archaeology program, students build a strong foundation in archaeological principles, scientific methods and specialist practice through a combination of core and optional modules. In Year 1, students take 80 credits of core modules introducing field and laboratory techniques and the archaeology of Britain and Mediterranean societies, with an additional 40 credits chosen from options such as conservation, ancient history, medieval worlds and the study of artefacts, enabling exploration of individual interests. Year 2 focuses on the practical application of archaeological science and interpretation, including an independent research project and a professional placement worth 20 credits undertaken during the summer. Students also select 40 credits of optional modules covering themes such as prehistoric Europe, archaeological illustration and medieval life. In Year 3, students take a second professional placement as the only core module, while optional modules allow specialisation in scientific methods or archaeological periods, with at least two options required to be science-based. Choices include forensic and osteoarchaeology, evidence-based preservation, GIS, early medieval Britain and the Roman world, alongside the option to complete a full dissertation presented in journal article format. The program gradually develops expertise, independence and professional readiness.
