COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the three years of the BA Archaeology and Ancient History, students build a strong understanding of ancient societies through a balance of archaeological practice and historical interpretation. In Year 1, students take six core modules covering archaeological field skills, the archaeology of Britain and the Mediterranean, and the history and cultures of the Near East, Greece and Rome from 1000 BCE to the later Roman Empire, alongside an introduction to evidence and methods in ancient history. In Year 2, students take two core modules: an independent project and a professional placement that develops practical experience. They also choose an approaches module in archaeology or ancient history and three optional modules, allowing specialisation in areas such as prehistoric Europe, Greek art, the Hellenistic world, ancient Rome, gender studies, archaeological illustration or classical languages. Year 3 centres on a 40-credit interdisciplinary dissertation combining archaeological and historical research, supported by academic supervision. Students also select four optional modules that deepen specialist knowledge in areas such as osteoarchaeology, GIS, museums management, Byzantine history, warfare, religion, medicine or specific ancient cultures. The structure enables students to develop academic expertise, practical skills and professional experience, preparing them for careers in heritage, museums and related fields.
