COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Software Engineering degree is structured over three years to build professional programming skills and real industry experience. In year one, students learn to think like software engineers and begin coding professionally using languages such as JavaScript, Java and Python to design and deploy web applications based on customer requirements. They gain foundational knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, industry-standard development tools and best practices. The year also introduces key professional skills including communication, agile development and project planning through modules in web development, computational thinking, software development skills, computing fundamentals and database systems. In year two, students work on larger and more technically challenging projects, developing expertise in areas such as performance, scalability, DevOps, cyber security and mobile application development. They learn to manage development tasks within teams and engage directly with clients while planning and leading project meetings. In year three, learning focuses on user experience design, emerging technologies, organisational change and commercial frameworks. Students collaborate in a large team project to deliver a high-quality software solution for real clients, applying professional development and project management approaches. The final year integrates knowledge from across the program to prepare students to work confidently as software engineers in industry.
