COURSE CURRICULUM

The BMus in Music is a specialised degree offering in-depth musical training and academic study, beginning in year one with a strong focus on foundational knowledge. Students are required to take the core module Elements of Tonal Theory, which provides essential grounding in music theory and analysis, supporting all other areas of study. Alongside this, students must choose at least one year-long elective core module from Writing about Music, Case Studies in Music History, or Music as Culture. These modules enhance historical and stylistic understanding across a wide range of musical genres and develop students’ ability to critically engage with music through writing and discussion. Additional optional modules include composition, solo performance, ensemble participation, conducting, aural training, and jazz or popular music techniques. Students are also encouraged to join the university-led core ensembles for practical performance experience, whether or not these are taken as academic modules.In the second year, students consolidate their skills while maintaining breadth by selecting modules from at least three of four groups: Analytical and Critical Skills, Composition and Production, Practical Musicianship, and Musicology and Placement. The Business of Music module introduces students to various aspects of the music industry and includes the opportunity for a short work placement. This year also marks the beginning of research-led teaching, encouraging deeper academic engagement.Year three offers further specialisation and the chance to pursue up to two major project modules: Dissertation, Project in Ethnomusicology, Project in Music Analysis, Composition Portfolio, or the exclusive Recital module available only to BMus students. Students continue to study from at least three of the four subject groups, and research-led teaching remains central to the curriculum. This structure supports both academic excellence and creative development, preparing students for diverse careers in music or further study.
