COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering program provides a structured three-year pathway combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for professional practice. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through lectures and laboratory sessions covering engineering mathematics, fundamental civil engineering concepts, and applied design and practice. This grounding ensures readiness for more advanced study in subsequent years. The second year develops core engineering skills further, with modules in engineering analysis, building modelling, environmental engineering, hydraulics and soil mechanics, structural analysis, and sustainable civil engineering design and practice. Students also participate in a five-day off-site residential field course as part of the Field Studies of the Natural and Built Environment module, enhancing practical understanding of real-world applications. In the third year, students undertake a major individual project under supervision, which accounts for a significant portion of the year’s assessment, demonstrating their ability to apply knowledge independently. Core modules include hydrology and hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering design, digital and computational applications, advanced environmental engineering, and sustainable structural design. Optional modules allow further specialisation, building on the foundations from earlier years. Across all years, the program emphasizes a combination of theoretical understanding, practical skills, and professional development, preparing graduates to address contemporary challenges in civil and environmental engineering and pursue careers in consultancy, infrastructure, or sustainability-focused roles.
