COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year BA in Politics, International Relations, and a Modern Language is structured to combine political and linguistic studies, preparing students for global careers. In year one, students take 60 credits in politics and international relations, covering political theory, comparative government, and international relations, alongside 60 credits in language and cultural modules. Students begin their chosen modern language, either at Elementary or Upper Elementary level, with cultural-historical studies to provide a foundation in grammar, communication, and intercultural understanding. Year two builds on this foundation with core modules in UK government and international relations theories, while students advance their language skills to Intermediate or Upper-Intermediate level, exploring cultural, historical, and business aspects of their language. The program offers opportunities for mentoring and professional skills development. Year three is a full-year placement abroad in a language-speaking country, through exchange programs, teaching placements, or work placements, enabling immersion in the language and culture while gaining practical experience. In the final year, students return to Cardiff to complete 60 credits in politics and international relations, including at least one core module in each area, and 60 credits in advanced language and optional modules. Opportunities to undertake a language dissertation, teaching placements, and research projects allow students to refine independent research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in international, governmental, or private sectors.
