COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welsh BA at Cardiff University develops students’ proficiency in the Welsh language while deepening their understanding of literature, culture, and identity in both historical and contemporary contexts. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational skills and knowledge, exploring the language and literature according to whether they studied Welsh as a first or second language. Optional modules allow students to develop skills in creative and professional writing, literary analysis, and contemporary Welsh usage. In the second year, students take core modules that include a work-based experience in Welsh language use and a study of how diverse identities are expressed through language and literature. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in areas such as creative writing, linguistic policy, contemporary poetry, language acquisition, and cultural history, allowing students to connect their studies with professional and vocational interests. In the final year, students undertake two core modules that focus on the relationship between language and identity, including the role of media and technology in shaping the Welsh language and its sustainability. They also complete an independent research project or extended essay under expert supervision. Optional modules allow further exploration of translation, education, contemporary literature, and language planning, ensuring that graduates leave with strong practical, analytical, and professional skills relevant to careers in education, media, heritage, and beyond.
