COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welsh and Linguistics BA program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the Welsh language, its literature and culture, alongside rigorous study of linguistics. In year one, students develop foundational skills in both subjects, exploring Welsh language and literature in contemporary, historical, and social contexts, while linguistics modules introduce essential tools for analysis, academic writing, and critical thinking. In year two, the Welsh component builds on these skills and includes a work placement in a workplace where Welsh is used daily, allowing students to apply their language abilities in professional settings. Optional modules enable further exploration of Welsh language, literature, and culture, including topics relevant to careers such as language planning and creative industries. Linguistics study in year two focuses on areas such as phonetics, syntax, semantics, discourse, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests. In the final year, students undertake independent research in Welsh through an extended essay or project, while in linguistics they take a core module on working with linguistic data and select optional modules covering topics such as forensic linguistics, psycholinguistics, world Englishes, and language in society. The program develops practical, analytical, and employability skills, preparing graduates for careers in language, education, research, media, and communication.
