COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welsh and History BA program combines the study of the Welsh language, literature, and culture with historical analysis, providing an interdisciplinary and comprehensive academic experience. In Welsh, students develop key linguistic, analytical, creative, and employability skills while exploring literature and language in historical, social, and contemporary contexts. First- and second-language students follow tailored modules to build their proficiency, and later have opportunities to undertake projects, extended essays, or work-based experience to enhance practical and professional skills. In History, the first year introduces students to foundational frameworks, debates, and approaches, encouraging critical engagement with global connections and historical change, alongside optional modules across a variety of periods and regions. In the second year, students build on these skills, exploring theoretical approaches, methods, and sources, while optional modules offer comparative and thematic studies, including political, social, economic, and cultural histories. The final year emphasizes independent research, specialist modules, and the opportunity to undertake a dissertation, allowing students to develop expertise in a specific area or period. Throughout the program, students gain advanced analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, heritage, public service, media, or other fields where historical understanding, cultural literacy, and bilingual proficiency are valuable assets.
