COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welsh and Education BA at Cardiff University is a joint honours program designed to provide an integrated understanding of the Welsh language, literature, and culture alongside education studies. In year one, students take 120 credits, equally divided between Welsh and Education. The Welsh component focuses on developing linguistic, analytical, creative, and employability skills, with separate core modules for first-language and second-language students to build a strong foundation in language and literature. Education modules introduce key concepts in social science research and educational theory. In year two, students continue with 60 credits in each subject. The Welsh component develops language skills in academic and vocational contexts and includes work experience, while optional modules allow exploration of literature, translation, and language planning. Education studies include core modules on social research methods, sociology of education, and school policy assessment, with further optional modules to tailor the program to individual interests. In the final year, students again take 60 credits in Welsh and 60 in Education, completing either a research taster or an extended research project in Welsh, and a 40-credit dissertation in Education. Optional modules allow further specialisation and the development of practical, research, and analytical skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, language, media, and public service.
