COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Translation program at Cardiff University is a three-year course that combines translation studies with one or two modern languages, offering students the opportunity to develop complementary skills in linguistics and cultural understanding. In the first year, students study two core translation modules alongside language modules at Elementary or Upper Elementary levels, with an introduction to the histories, cultures, and societies associated with their chosen language(s). In the second year, students advance their knowledge of translation theory and professional practice, working with specialised texts in areas such as law, medicine, and literature, while continuing to develop their language skills through Intermediate or Upper Intermediate modules. Students also have opportunities to engage with the wider community through mentoring and language ambassador schemes. The third year focuses on professional translation practice, training in translation technology, and preparing students for the translation industry by addressing project management, ethics, and networking. Students continue to refine their language abilities through Advanced modules and can undertake an extended dissertation or annotated translation project, exploring topics from medical texts to subtitling and literary translation. Additional optional modules cover cultural, historical, and literary subjects, and students may participate in teaching placements, allowing them to apply their skills in practical and professional contexts.
