COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Modern History, Politics, and International Relations is structured to provide a balanced study of historical and political disciplines. In year one, students take core modules in history that introduce frameworks, approaches, and the development of the modern world, alongside politics and international relations modules covering political thought, comparative government, and international relations. Optional modules allow exploration of modern British history, global histories, and historical sources. Year two builds on foundational knowledge with a core history module focused on theoretical approaches and methods, while optional modules enable thematic and comparative studies across narrower time periods. Politics and international relations continue with core modules on UK governance and international relations theories, supplemented by optional modules addressing European politics, public policy, decolonisation, and social movements. In year three, students select from a wide range of optional modules in both history and politics, allowing for deeper engagement with specialised topics and independent research, including the opportunity to complete a dissertation. Historical modules challenge students to analyse sources, critically engage with historical developments, and explore diverse global contexts, while politics and international relations modules encourage deeper understanding of political systems, international dynamics, and contemporary issues. The program cultivates analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing students for careers in public service, research, international organisations, and other fields that value historical insight and political literacy.
