COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics and a Modern Language (BA) program combines rigorous study of linguistics with advanced modern language learning to develop students’ communication, analytical, and intercultural skills. In the first year, students study core linguistics modules covering language description, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics, alongside modules in a chosen modern language—Spanish, French, or Mandarin—at either Elementary or Upper Elementary level, complemented by cultural-historical studies. In the second year, language study progresses to Intermediate or Upper-Intermediate level, preparing students for a year abroad, while linguistics modules allow exploration of phonetics, syntax, semantics, and language acquisition, alongside foundation modules that build research skills and analytical techniques. The final year integrates advanced language study with research-led linguistics modules, offering opportunities for independent study through a dissertation. Students can select from cultural-historical topics such as literature, film, visual culture, colonialism, gender studies, or teaching placements, deepening their understanding of language in context. The program emphasizes the interplay between language, culture, and society, fostering critical thinking, adaptability, and global awareness. Graduates acquire a broad range of academic, linguistic, and practical skills, including research, problem-solving, and intercultural competence, preparing them for careers in international business, education, translation, media, communications, and other global professions where language and cultural understanding are essential.
