COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BA Journalism and Communications degree, students follow a shared curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in journalism, media and cultural studies. They study six core modules covering the history and development of mass communication, media scholarship, audience analysis, advertising, and journalism studies, with optional modules available. Teaching combines lectures and seminars that introduce key concepts and develop analytical and academic writing skills. In the second year, students take two core modules focused on data journalism and media research methods, alongside four optional modules that allow them to explore specialist topics such as political communication, media law, cultural theory, public relations and employability. They begin designing research methodologies and developing independent and group research skills, preparing them for the demands of a dissertation. In the final year, students choose from a broad range of specialist elective modules and may undertake an optional dissertation based on independent research. Teaching formats become more varied and project-based, and students apply theoretical knowledge to practical or analytical assignments. By the end of the program, they will have gained advanced critical understanding, professional writing skills, and specialist expertise aligned with their interests and career ambitions.
