COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History and a Modern Language degree spans three years of study in Cardiff, plus a structured year abroad, combining historical analysis with intensive language development. In Year 1, students take equal credits in history and their chosen language, learning core historical frameworks, global debates, and critical interpretation while beginning or advancing in Chinese, French or Spanish, alongside cultural modules. Optional history modules offer exploration of themes such as religion, media, and heritage. Year 2 develops research abilities through a core history module and specialist optional topics, while language study progresses to intermediate or upper-intermediate level, preparing students for their time abroad. Students may choose cultural, business language or translation modules and participate in mentoring or ambassador initiatives supporting language education in schools. In Year 3, returning from the year abroad, students take advanced language study and specialist cultural modules, with history options covering a wide range of global and thematic topics. Both disciplines offer the chance to complete an independently researched dissertation guided by academic supervision. The program strengthens linguistic fluency, critical thinking, intercultural communication, and independent research skills, equipping graduates for careers in international fields, education, culture, and beyond.
