COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature with Creative Writing BA at Cardiff offers a comprehensive program that combines literary study with practical creative writing experience. In the first year, students take six core modules that provide essential skills in reading, writing, research, creativity, and employability, including creative writing modules that introduce them to foundational techniques and literary analysis. In the second year, students focus on 80 credits of English literature and 40 credits of creative writing, selecting modules from two literary baskets that cover periods, themes, genres, and interdisciplinary approaches, including literature’s connections with film, the environment, colonialism, and feminism. Creative writing modules in year two explore various forms such as poetry, fiction, screenwriting, and playwriting, allowing students to develop their voice and technical expertise. In the final year, students undertake a 20-credit core English literature module focused on in-depth study of a single text, alongside 60 credits of optional literary modules. Creative writing students complete a 40-credit portfolio under academic guidance, with the opportunity to produce a supervised dissertation if desired. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to approach literature both as critical analysts and creative practitioners, developing the ability to produce sophisticated, polished creative work while engaging with literary history, theory, and contemporary issues, preparing them for a range of professional and academic pathways.
