COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and Philosophy BA at Cardiff enables students to explore how literature and philosophy illuminate complex social, ethical, and cultural issues. The program allows the study of literature from different periods, cultures, and genres, while examining its connections with film, art, history, technology, language, and everyday life. Students gain an understanding of how literature addresses social, environmental, and economic concerns, encouraging reflection on creating a more inclusive and sustainable world. In philosophy, students build a strong foundation in areas including philosophy of language, epistemology, philosophy of mind, moral and political philosophy, and may also study aesthetics, feminist philosophy, and phenomenology. The final year offers opportunities to specialise in preferred areas of study and apply philosophical research to real-world ethical or social problems through a core module project. Concurrently, the final-year English literature core module involves an in-depth study of a single text and the development of a public-facing project, integrating research and critical analysis. Across the program, students develop key skills in critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, gaining the ability to assess evidence, construct arguments, and engage with contemporary ethical and social challenges. Graduates are well-prepared to apply their knowledge and analytical abilities in a range of professional and academic contexts.
