COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and History BA program provides a comprehensive study of literature and history, equipping students with critical reading, writing, and research skills across both disciplines. In the first year, students take core modules in English literature that focus on literary analysis and interpretation, alongside history modules that introduce key frameworks, methods, and global perspectives. Optional modules allow students to explore specific historical periods and themes, while literature options provide exposure to a range of genres and approaches. In the second year, students have the flexibility to select English literature modules from two baskets covering literary periods or thematic studies, including literature and the environment, film, visual culture, race, colonialism, and feminisms. History modules develop students’ understanding of theoretical approaches, evidence, and historiography, with optional modules enabling comparative study across periods and regions. By the final year, students consolidate their knowledge and skills, choosing specialised modules that allow in-depth exploration of literary texts or historical topics, and engaging with current research and scholarship. A core literature module provides the opportunity for detailed study of a single text, while students may also undertake an independent research project or dissertation in either discipline. The program fosters critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to connect literature and history, preparing students for diverse academic and professional pathways.
