COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and a Modern Language BA at Cardiff is a four-year program that combines the study of English literature with a modern language, aiming to develop global citizens with strong critical, cultural, and linguistic skills. In the first year, students take 60 credits in English literature and 60 credits in a modern language, building foundational skills in critical reading, writing, and analysis, while developing basic or upper elementary language competence and cultural understanding. Year two allows students to advance their language studies to intermediate or upper-intermediate level and choose literature modules across periods, genres, and themes, enhancing their analytical skills and cultural awareness. The third year is spent abroad in a language-speaking country through study, teaching, or work placements, providing immersive experiences that strengthen language fluency, independence, resilience, and intercultural understanding. In the final year, students return to Cardiff to further develop their English literature and language skills through advanced modules, optional thematic or cultural-historical studies, and the opportunity to undertake a dissertation. Final year modules encourage independent research, critical engagement with contemporary scholarship, and practical application of knowledge. Graduates leave the program with strong analytical, communication, and intercultural competencies, well-prepared for a variety of professional paths or further academic study.
