COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Linguistics BA degree provides a thorough grounding in linguistic analysis, communication, and research skills. In the first year, students complete 120 credits of core modules, covering essential tools of linguistic study, academic writing, and the foundations of language in mind, society, and communication. Modules include Language and the Mind, How Language Works, Developing English, Understanding Communication, and Writing at University and Beyond, equipping students with the skills necessary for advanced study. In the second year, three core modules build on these foundations, focusing on discourse, structure, meaning, function, and the sounds of speech, while three optional modules allow students to explore specific interests such as sociolinguistics, digital literacy, language and gender, and first and second language acquisition. The third year emphasizes employability and independent research, with a core module on working with linguistic data and a wide range of optional modules to tailor the degree to individual interests. Options include forensic linguistics, professional and intercultural communication, world Englishes, language and popular culture, and dissertation projects. Across all years, the program develops critical thinking, analytical skills, and practical experience in language analysis, preparing graduates for careers in research, communication, education, and related fields.
