COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Archaeology program is structured over three years to develop both practical field skills and academic knowledge. In year one, students complete 80 credits of core modules that introduce essential archaeological techniques for field and laboratory work, alongside modules exploring the archaeology of Britain and Mediterranean societies. An additional 40 credits of optional modules allow students to broaden their perspective by studying related subjects across history, archaeology and religion. In year two, students undertake 80 credits of core modules focused on archaeological interpretation, understanding social, economic and environmental contexts, and an independent research project. A professional placement worth 20 credits takes place during the summer between years one and two, giving hands-on experience in archaeology or heritage. Students also choose 40 credits of optional modules to specialise in regions, periods or technical skills. In the final year, students complete a core advanced placement module undertaken in the summer between years two and three, while the remaining credits are made up of optional modules that explore specialist archaeological topics or methods. Students may choose to complete a dissertation to develop advanced independent research skills. At least two optional modules must be period-based humanities modules, with the option to include one science-based module.
