COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the three years of the BA Archaeology and History, students develop a strong foundation in understanding the past through both material culture and historical interpretation. In Year 1, archaeology modules introduce the archaeology of Britain from early humans to the twentieth century and the Mediterranean world, alongside training in field skills and visits to heritage sites. History modules establish core study skills, exploring frameworks for historical interpretation, global connections and major debates. Optional choices allow students to study medieval, early modern or modern history. Between Years 1 and 2, students undertake a four-week professional placement on an archaeological excavation or within a heritage organisation. Year 2 includes a core history module focused on key theoretical approaches, while optional modules in both subjects allow students to specialise in specific periods, regions or themes, including prehistoric Europe, illustration, medieval life, environmental history and politics. Students also develop understanding of evidence types and public engagement. In Year 3, all modules are optional, enabling deeper specialisation in archaeological methods or historical topics such as the Byzantine Empire, digital history, early modern politics, warfare and global conflicts. Students may also complete an interdisciplinary dissertation, gaining advanced research skills and preparing for careers in heritage, research, education, museums and related fields.
