COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History degree is structured across three years, combining core academic training with a wide range of optional modules that allow for personal interests and specialisation. In year one, students study 80 credits of core modules that introduce the ancient world from 1000 BC to AD 680 and develop essential academic and research skills. Alongside these, 40 credits of optional modules offer opportunities to explore related areas such as archaeology, religion, medieval history, film and heritage, and ancient languages. Year two includes 40 credits of core modules that investigate the history of the discipline itself and require students to complete an independent project presented in a creative format. Students also choose 80 credits of optional modules from subjects including Greece and the Near East, Roman society, gender and sexuality, art and archaeology, and visual history, ensuring deeper engagement with specialist periods and themes. In year three, students undertake a 40-credit dissertation based on original research, supported by supervision, and select 80 credits of optional modules that reflect active research expertise in topics such as the Byzantine Empire, Greek and Roman medicine, warfare, religion, and empires. The final year consolidates advanced research, analytical, presentation and problem-solving skills.
