COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History and History degree spans three years, combining core academic training with a wide variety of optional modules. In year one, students take 100 credits of core modules and 20 credits of optional modules, gaining foundational knowledge of the ancient world from 1000 BC to AD 680 and learning key academic skills. They are also introduced to major historical frameworks, global connections, and different methods of writing and interpreting history. Optional modules provide chances to explore additional historical periods and themes. In year two, students complete 40 credits of core modules, including an independent project in ancient history and a module on key theoretical approaches in historical writing. The remaining 80 credits are chosen from a wide range of options covering ancient, medieval, early modern and modern periods, with opportunities to study ancient languages, take specialist thematic modules, or gain work experience. The focus shifts towards deeper engagement with evidence, comparative study, and public history. In year three, students complete a 40-credit interdisciplinary dissertation and 80 credits of advanced optional modules across both subjects, specialising in themes such as warfare, empire, medicine, religion, medieval Britain, modern Europe, Asia, and global conflicts. The final year consolidates advanced analytical, research and communication skills.
