ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Cardiff University, a prominent public research institution in Wales, was established in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. It became a founding member of the University of Wales in 1893 and went through various mergers and name changes before becoming Cardiff University in 2005 with full degree-awarding powers. As the only Welsh member of the prestigious Russell Group, the university is known for its research intensity and academic excellence. Over the years, it has been home to influential academics, including Nobel laureates and fellows of major scholarly academies. Rooted in the Welsh university movement of the 19th century, its founding was strongly linked to national identity and educational accessibility. The university experienced significant growth, including the development of a medical school and major campus expansions in Cathays Park. A 1988 financial crisis led to a merger with UWIST, and later in 2004, it re-merged with the University of Wales College of Medicine, becoming fully independent. Cardiff has since launched notable research centers such as the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre. Recent years have seen controversy over staff workload and budget constraints. In 2025, Cardiff announced major cost-cutting measures, including course discontinuations and staff reductions, following a £31.2 million deficit. Despite having significant reserves, the university faces ongoing financial challenges, reflecting broader issues in the UK higher education sector. The institution has since reached agreements to minimize the impact of cuts and has pledged no compulsory redundancies for 2025. Cardiff’s long history includes significant contributions to education and research, and its leadership has included key academic figures such as John Viriamu Jones and current Vice-Chancellor Wendy Larner.
