COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sport Psychology comprises a series of core modules that reflect the curriculum and competency requirements of the British Psychological Society (BPS), with no optional modules available. The program is designed to provide a comprehensive and in-depth education in the theory, research, and applied practice of sport psychology. Central to the course is the Dissertation Project (60 credits), which enables students to conduct an extended piece of independent research on a topic of interest, applying the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program. Students also complete Research Methods in Sport (Quantitative Pathway), where they develop advanced skills in statistical analysis and data interpretation relevant to sport psychology research.The module on Counselling Approaches and Skills for Sport Psychologists introduces foundational counselling techniques to help students understand and support athletes in varied psychological contexts. Professional Development and Practice in Sport Psychology focuses on the competencies needed to work ethically and effectively as a practitioner, preparing students for applied settings. Development Perspectives and Athlete Well-being addresses the psychological needs of athletes throughout their development, exploring how mental health, motivation, and support systems influence performance and overall well-being.Research Design in Sport Psychology builds on previous research modules by refining students’ ability to design and implement robust studies in applied environments. Sport Psychology: Theory to Practice bridges the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, offering insights into how psychological principles are used in real-life coaching and performance settings. Collectively, these modules prepare students to engage critically and competently with contemporary challenges in sport psychology, and provide the academic foundation for pursuing professional training routes towards becoming a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist. The structure ensures students acquire both theoretical depth and practical readiness, essential for careers in elite sport, youth development, coaching support, or further academic research.
