COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sport Coaching is structured around a comprehensive set of core modules that aim to provide students with a critical and research-informed understanding of coaching as both a practical and intellectual pursuit. The module Deconstructing Sports Coaching Practice Through Theory encourages students to question and critique established coaching norms and practices by applying theoretical perspectives. Following this, Reconstructing Sports Coaching Practice Through Theory enables students to develop alternative coaching approaches based on critical insights and creative thinking. Managing Coaching Problems addresses the real-life challenges faced in coaching contexts, helping students explore ethical and effective solutions through applied case studies and reflective practice. Understanding the Micro-political Landscape in Sport explores the power relations, politics, and stakeholder influences within sports environments, preparing students to navigate complex interpersonal and organisational dynamics.Research Methods for Sport provides students with the tools to design, conduct, and critically evaluate research, developing both qualitative and quantitative skills essential for evidence-based practice. This foundation supports the Dissertation Project, where students independently research a topic of their choice, demonstrating advanced inquiry and critical thinking in a written equivalent of 12,000 words.Students also choose one optional module to tailor their learning to their interests. These include Critical Study of Sport Coaching, Sustainable Practice in Sport and Physical Culture, Social Issues and Sporting Legacies, or an Independent Study. These options allow students to delve deeper into relevant contemporary themes such as environmental sustainability in sport, cultural and societal impacts, or emerging debates within coaching. Overall, the program blends theory with real-world application, fostering reflective and ethical practitioners who are capable of contributing meaningfully to the evolving field of sport coaching in academic, professional, or community settings.
