COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Product Design at Cardiff Met is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of contemporary product design. In Semester 1, students engage with modules such as Perception, Cognition, Emotion, and Context, Product Development Principles and Practice, and Research Techniques and Principles, which establish a strong foundation in design thinking, human-centred approaches, and research methodologies. Sustainability Issues in Design for Production and User Testing and Evaluation modules encourage students to consider the ethical, social, and environmental impact of their design decisions while developing practical skills in evaluating and refining products. The Industrial Placement module offers students hands-on industry experience, enabling them to apply their learning in real-world contexts and gain insight into professional design practices. The program culminates in a Major Project, a 60-credit module where students undertake an independent, substantial design project that integrates research, practical skills, and creativity to produce a professional-quality outcome. Students have exit points at different stages: completing 60 credits earns a Postgraduate Certificate, completing 120 credits without the Major Project awards a Postgraduate Diploma, and completing all modules, including the Major Project, leads to the MSc Product Design. This structure ensures students gain a blend of academic knowledge, practical expertise, and industry experience, preparing them for diverse careers in product design, innovation, and related fields.
