COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Criminology & Criminal Investigations is a comprehensive 180-credit program designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in criminological theory and investigative practice. The course begins with Critical and Contemporary Issues in Criminology, which revisits foundational theories and explores topics such as green criminology and penology. Investigating Global Crimes and Social Harms broadens the perspective to international and transnational crimes, covering war crimes, genocide, organised crime, and human trafficking. Conducting Criminological Research develops methodological skills, emphasizing the design and execution of rigorous, ethical qualitative and quantitative research in preparation for the dissertation.The module on Criminals, Victims and Vulnerability examines how issues such as homelessness, substance misuse, poverty, and Adverse Childhood Experiences contribute to vulnerability among both offenders and victims, with a particular focus on the criminal justice system’s treatment of vulnerable witnesses. Investigating Violent and Serious Crimes takes a detailed look at the stages of major crime investigations, particularly homicide, exploring forensic, digital, and psychological methods. The Psychology and Application of Investigative Interviewing explores interviewing techniques used in England and Wales, as well as international approaches, with a focus on psychological principles and practical applications.Students culminate their studies with a 60-credit dissertation, conducting independent research into a topic of their choosing under academic supervision, following strict ethical standards. This project allows for in-depth exploration of a particular area of criminological interest.Exit awards are available for those who do not complete the full MSc. The Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) includes all six taught modules but excludes the dissertation, totalling 120 credits. The Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) comprises the first three core modules, totaling 60 credits, providing a foundation in criminological theory, global crimes, and research methodology. These flexible pathways make the program suitable for a range of academic and professional goals.
