COURSE CURRICULUM

The MDes Global Design program is structured across three semesters, guiding students through a comprehensive process of research, practice, and critical reflection. In Semester 1, students undertake two integrated modules, Change through Design and Context and Methodologies Part 1, which provide theoretical and conceptual frameworks to understand global design practice. The Change through Design module encourages exploration of counterfactual scenarios and "what if" thinking, promoting responsible engagement and reflection on present actions through diverse methodologies. Semester 2 focuses on the Idea and Contexts modules, supporting the development and implementation of research proposals in relation to global, ethical, social, and political concerns. Students explore relational aspects of design through collaboration with peers from other arts programs and critically examine paradigms, influences, and boundaries that shape their projects. Semester 3 culminates in the Output module, where students consolidate their research findings in a major project presented as a curated exhibition alongside a written paper or article. This module emphasizes the integration of practice-led work and professional documentation, demonstrating mastery of research methods, skills, and processes. Students are supported through tutorials, mentoring, and seminars, developing their ability to communicate findings to both academic and non-academic audiences. Exit awards include a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or full Master’s degree upon completion of 180 credits.
