COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Visual Communication Design at Cardiff Met is structured around a self-defined project, with each student supported by a Personal Tutor and subject-specialist staff forming a Supervisory Team. The course relies on skilled practitioners as key facilitators, using a variety of teaching methods aimed at developing students as proactive and reflective independent learners. In Semester 1, students undertake two integrated modules, Vision and Context and Methodologies Part 1, which cultivate the ability to position ideas within a critical framework and advance scholarship in contemporary visual communication design. Semester 2 focuses on the modules Idea and Contexts Part 2, supporting advanced scholarship and the implementation of the research proposal developed in Semester 1. This phase emphasises speculative prototyping and the incorporation of specialisms such as material futures or digital concepts, enabling students to develop advanced skills in technology and materials relevant to their projects. In Semester 3, students complete the Output module, which consolidates research findings through the realisation of a major project showcased in an exhibition and a written paper or article. Students are assessed on the integration of practice and research, demonstrating their creative vision, technical skills, and critical thinking. Completion of 60 credits awards a Postgraduate Certificate, 120 credits a Postgraduate Diploma, and 180 credits a full Master’s degree, marking their progression and mastery in the field.
