COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA TESOL program at Cardiff Met comprises a range of core modules designed to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The Description of English for Language Teachers module equips students with key linguistic concepts and analytical tools to describe and analyse language and learner errors, covering areas such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse, and sociolinguistics. The Second Language Acquisition module introduces theories and research in second language learning, examining factors such as age, input, interaction, and psychological and sociolinguistic influences on language development. Introduction to TESOL Methodology focuses on practical teaching skills, lesson planning, and classroom observation, aimed at students with limited teaching experience. Teaching English to Young Learners develops understanding of methods, materials, and principles for teaching English to children, including literacy development and material design. Teaching English for Specific and Academic Purposes addresses curriculum design, assessment, and needs analysis for diverse learners in fields such as business, engineering, medicine, and academic English. The MA Dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct original research under supervision, demonstrating critical engagement with current literature and applying theoretical knowledge in innovative ways. Students may also select one optional module from other education programs, such as Education, Diversity and Equality, Specific Learning Difficulties, Leadership in Education Settings, or Multi-Agency Working, allowing further specialisation and breadth in their studies.
