COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Photography program is structured around a student-driven project, supported by a combination of specialist tutors and supervisors to guide independent and reflective learning. In Semester 1, students undertake two integrated modules, Vision and Context and Methodologies Part 1, designed to help position ideas within a critical framework and advance scholarship in contemporary photography while developing a research proposal. Semester 2 continues this progression through the Idea and Contexts modules, allowing students to contextualise and implement their research proposal in relation to global, ethical, social, and political concerns. This semester emphasizes advanced skills, including speculative prototyping and the application of material and digital technologies, supporting the development of a comprehensive Masters project. In Semester 3, students complete the Output module, which consolidates their research and practice through the creation of a major project, showcased in a curated exhibition, alongside a written paper or article. The exhibition and documentation reflect both practical and theoretical understanding, demonstrating professional-level skills in photography. The program offers exit points at 60 credits for a Postgraduate Certificate, 120 credits for a Postgraduate Diploma, and 180 credits for the full MA. By the end of the course, students emerge as autonomous practitioners, capable of critically engaging with photographic practice, producing original work, and communicating their ideas to both academic and professional audiences.
