COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA English Literature program is structured over one year full-time or two years part-time, requiring a total of 180 credits, including six 20-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Each year, students study four specialist subject modules alongside Research Methods and Literary and Critical Theory to develop advanced academic skills. The curriculum offers a broad range of thematic and analytical approaches across literature, beginning with modules such as “Juvenile Trash: Rethinking Genre Fiction,” which challenges assumptions about genre writing by exploring the cultural, political, and artistic value of works including fantasy, science fiction, crime, and historical fiction. “Literature and Landscapes” examines the interplay between identity, environment, and representation, particularly in nineteenth-century texts. “Reading the City” investigates the city as an active narrative force from modernism to contemporary writing. Other options include “Adaptations, Transformations, Rejections,” which considers how major literary works are reinterpreted across time and media; “Making Trouble: Gender and Sexuality in Literature,” which studies how writers challenge dominant constructs of identity; and the “Special Author Topic,” an in-depth exploration of a single influential writer. The program concludes with an independent dissertation project, allowing students to develop specialist expertise and contribute original research to the field.
