COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching degree at Cardiff Met develops students’ practical coaching skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional competence over three years. In the first year, students focus on building confidence and competence in coaching through modules on professional development, coaching practice, and understanding sport coaching relationships. They gain experience coaching a variety of sports and activities in supportive settings, while learning about safeguarding, inclusive practice, and the ethical responsibilities of coaching. In the second year, the emphasis shifts to understanding the theories behind coaching methods, applying knowledge of athlete learning, and building meaningful coaching relationships through work placements. Project-based learning develops research skills, critical thinking, and evidence-informed decision-making, while optional modules allow students to specialise according to their interests. In the final year, students further develop independence and leadership skills, focusing on applying their abilities to drive positive change within coaching environments. Modules on placement as agents-for-change, coaching other coaches, and a final project enable students to consolidate learning, explore a personally meaningful topic, and make a practical impact. Optional modules provide further opportunities to deepen expertise in areas such as strength and conditioning, nutrition, ethics, sport development, and digital communication. Graduates leave equipped with the practical experience, academic knowledge, and professional skills to excel as innovative, reflective, and responsible sports coaches.
