COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy degree at Cardiff Met is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive foundation in the profession over three years. In the first year, students build core knowledge in linguistics, phonetics, anatomy, physiology, and psychology, while beginning clinical education through lectures and tutorials led by practising therapists. Early placements include observing child development in nurseries, engaging with older adults in communication partner settings, and completing an initial clinical practice placement, providing practical insight into client interactions. In the second year, teaching becomes more clinically focused, expanding students’ understanding of specific speech and language disorders and introducing areas such as hearing, audiology, and dysphagia. Students gain experience managing their own caseloads during block placements, developing assessment and intervention skills under guidance. The third year emphasizes specialised clinical areas, including bilingualism, stammering, voice disorders, multiple disabilities, and alternative and augmentative communication. Students deepen their understanding of professional practice, ethics, and multidisciplinary working, while dedicating a significant portion of their time to clinical placements. They also carry out data collection and analysis as part of an independent research project. Across the degree, students progressively integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience, developing the professional, clinical, and research skills necessary for a successful career as a qualified speech and language therapist.
