COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Software Engineering degree at Cardiff Met provides a structured and progressive learning pathway across three years, combining foundational theory with practical software development skills. In the first year, students complete 120 credits of compulsory modules designed to establish core computing knowledge, including programming principles, architectures and operating systems, computational thinking, web design and databases, software design and development, and an exploratory module to encourage broader technical understanding. The second year builds on this foundation with 100 credits of compulsory modules focused on object-oriented system design, mobile and web technologies, agile development and DevOps, and algorithms and data structures. Students also choose one optional module from areas such as data and knowledge management or networks and communications, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. In the final year, students complete 100 credits of compulsory modules including parallel and distributed systems, advanced programming, a 40-credit development project, and professional, sustainable, and ethical technology, preparing them for professional practice. Additionally, students select one optional module from cyber security and cryptography, industrial work experience, or advanced web technology, providing opportunities for specialization or practical industry engagement. This structure ensures graduates leave with comprehensive software engineering skills, practical project experience, and readiness for careers in software development, web and mobile applications, or advanced computing fields.
