COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Social Work degree at Cardiff Met is designed to develop professional knowledge, skills, and values essential for a career in social work, combining academic study with extensive practice-based learning. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of social work, including legislation, social policy, human development, and the role of social work in contemporary society. Modules such as Introduction to Professional Social Work, Skills and Values for Social Work Practice, and Introduction to Assessment provide a strong theoretical and practical grounding, complemented by 20 days of practice-based learning and opportunities for reflection and simulation exercises. In the second year, the focus shifts to the application of knowledge and skills in practice, with modules covering law and social policy, social work theories, evidence-informed practice, co-production, reflective practice, and outcome-focused interventions. Students undertake a full-time 80-day practice learning opportunity, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. In the final year, students consolidate their competence through advanced modules exploring complex contemporary social work practice, emerging trends, and evidence-informed approaches. This includes a 100-day placement to gain practical experience. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, professional judgment, and practical skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the social work profession as competent and reflective practitioners.
