COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Product Design degree at Cardiff Met equips students with the skills and knowledge required to respond creatively to real-world challenges and human needs. In the first year, students explore the fundamentals of design through modules on visualisation, presentation, materials, and processes, developing an understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and environmental roles of product designers. Core academic skills are cultivated through research and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing students to engage in critical thinking and theoretical discourse. In the second year, students focus on developing their creative identity and technical expertise through the Practising Product Designer module, applying knowledge in areas such as usability, market-focused design, advanced product methodology, and material systems, while BSc students also study engineering science. The Real-World Contexts module and research proposal further strengthen their practical, analytical, and research capabilities, equipping them to handle complex design challenges. In the third year, students advance their professional practice by undertaking briefs from national or international competitions or addressing market needs, consolidating skills in project management, technical execution, and creative problem solving. Modules on positioning in practice and contribution ensure students reflect on their experiences, emerging as confident, industry-ready BSc (Hons) Product Design professionals prepared for employment, entrepreneurship, or further study.
