COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Podiatry degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University offers a structured three-year curriculum that progressively builds clinical, theoretical, and research expertise. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in core areas such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, gait analysis, and common podiatric pathologies. Modules include Theory of Podiatric Practice, Integrated Podiatric Practice, and Professional and Interprofessional Development. The year begins with pre-clinical training, preparing students with the essential skills and knowledge to engage in supervised clinical settings later in the year. Emphasis is placed on the integration of theory and practice to foster competence and confidence.The second year deepens this foundation, focusing on applied knowledge and specialist areas such as diabetes care, musculoskeletal disorders, and local anaesthetic administration. Students explore more complex patient cases through modules like Applied Theory of Podiatric Practice and Applied Podiatric Practice. Clinical placements become more advanced, introducing students to specialist podiatric clinics and enhancing diagnostic and treatment planning skills. Additional modules in health psychology, wellbeing, and research methods provide broader professional and academic development.In the final year, students undertake advanced clinical practice and academic research. Extended Podiatric Theory and Practice modules expose students to complex cases and further refine their clinical skills. The curriculum also focuses on employability and professional readiness, covering NHS and private sector pathways, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. A major research project allows students to engage in data collection and analysis, strengthening their academic rigour and critical thinking. The combination of theoretical depth, practical experience, and research preparation ensures graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of a modern podiatry career, capable of working confidently in diverse healthcare settings while fulfilling the clinical hour requirements for HCPC registration.
