COURSE CURRICULUM

This Healthcare Science (Life Sciences) program provides structured scientific and clinical training across three years, combining academic learning with extensive work-based experience. In Year One, students build essential knowledge in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology and human physiology, while developing laboratory, analytical and communication skills. This year also includes a three-week clinical placement in an IBMS-accredited NHS pathology laboratory, alongside interprofessional experience, preparing students for professional practice. Year Two focuses on advanced investigative techniques, research skills, epidemiology and the clinical importance of disease processes. Students are introduced to key specialisms within healthcare science, including blood science, cellular science, genetics science and infection science. A specialist year-long clinical placement begins in the summer and continues into the final year, giving students practical insight into real diagnostic work. In Year Three, academic study is combined with ongoing work-based learning through distance learning and block release. Students deepen their understanding of multidisciplinary approaches to disease diagnosis, laboratory investigation and patient management. Specialism-specific modules allow further professional development, while a major research project undertaken during placement fosters independent scientific enquiry and critical analytical ability. By graduation, students are equipped with comprehensive laboratory skills, specialist knowledge and professional experience for roles in clinical science and biomedical research.
