COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Computer and Data Science degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive understanding of computing, data analysis, and practical application. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of computational thinking, programming principles, computer architectures and operating systems, data analytics, and the broader impact of technology on society. The Explore module encourages curiosity and experimentation, allowing students to develop foundational technical and analytical skills. The second year builds on this knowledge with advanced topics, including data and knowledge management, data analysis, blockchain fundamentals, and data visualisation and storytelling. Students also engage in a collaborative project, applying their skills to real-world problems and developing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. In the final year, students focus on specialised skills such as data visualisation grammar and idioms, professional, sustainable, and ethical technology, and business analytics and intelligence. The Development Project allows students to integrate their learning into a substantial piece of independent work, demonstrating both technical competence and analytical insight. Optional modules, such as Industrial Work Experience or Computational Intelligence, provide further opportunities for practical exposure and professional development. Throughout the degree, students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in data science, analytics, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technology-driven fields.
