COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive understanding of human health, disease, and laboratory investigation. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, and immunology, while developing essential laboratory, analytical, communication, and transferable skills through practical sessions and teaching activities. The second year advances students’ expertise in molecular biology, cellular pathology, haematology, transfusion science, medical microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, and toxicology. Students also gain skills in epidemiology, data analysis, research methods, and specialist investigative techniques. A professional development module encourages reflection on career goals and the cultivation of transferable skills for future employment. The third year focuses on integrating knowledge to understand multidisciplinary approaches to research, diagnosis, and management of disease. Students study biomolecular analysis, translational research, contemporary topics in biomedical science, and laboratory investigation of disease, while undertaking a final year research project that promotes independent learning, technical research proficiency, scientific writing, and critical analysis. Throughout the degree, students are supported to develop both practical and theoretical competence, preparing them for careers in pathology, research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, and related fields, as well as for progression to higher degrees or professional qualifications.
