COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science (Health, Exercise & Nutrition) degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University provides a comprehensive and scientifically grounded education that explores the intersection of biomedical science, lifestyle, and health. In the first year, students are introduced to key subjects including human nutrition, physiology, biochemistry, and the psychology of sport and exercise. Emphasis is placed on understanding how physical activity influences both physical and mental development. Core modules such as Biochemistry, Cell Biology & Genetics, Anatomy & Physiology, Infection & Immunity, Laboratory Skills & Data Analysis, and Professional Development lay the foundation for applying scientific principles in the context of health and exercise science.In the second year, students build on this foundation through practical and laboratory-based sessions, focusing on how exercise and nutrition impact health and disease. They study Analytical, Research & Diagnostic Methods, Blood and Cellular Sciences, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Clinical Exercise Physiology, and Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology. There is also continued emphasis on professional development. This stage equips students with technical and analytical skills to assess and monitor health and performance, including training in techniques related to performance-enhancing drug detection.The third year offers students the opportunity to specialize and deepen their knowledge in key areas of health and exercise science. Core modules include a substantial Research Project, Contemporary Topics in Biomedical Sciences, Sports Medicine, Nutrition in Sport & Exercise, and Molecular & Metabolic Adaptation to Exercise. The focus during the final year is on critical thinking, independent research, and the integration of theoretical knowledge with applied biomedical and health science contexts. Students graduate with strong scientific expertise and practical experience, preparing them for careers in biomedical science, health promotion, clinical research, public health, or further academic study.
