COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Textile Design degree offers a comprehensive and practice-led curriculum structured across three years. In Year One, students explore the fundamentals of textile design through hands-on engagement with fabric manipulation, stitch, screen printing, dyeing, and design for fashion or interior markets. Professional design processes are introduced, including trend forecasting, mood board creation, colour theory, and collection development. Academic skills are developed through the Research Basics module, which focuses on sourcing, evaluating, and analysing information. Interdisciplinary Understanding encourages collaboration across disciplines to explore cultural and societal challenges. In Year Two, students are pushed to experiment and innovate through the Textile Horizons module, promoting risk-taking and surface/material exploration. The 21st Century Challenges module strengthens problem-solving skills through real-world and live briefs that address global issues. Real-World Contexts deepens students’ ability to align their practice with external stakeholders and community needs. The Research Proposal module allows students to develop a focused research direction, laying the groundwork for their final year. In Year Three, students consolidate their learning by producing a professional and individualised body of work that reflects their design methodology. Positioning in Practice helps students prepare for careers, further study, or entrepreneurship by refining their professional identity. Finally, the Contribution module requires students to present a major research project that integrates theoretical exploration with practical work, demonstrating their capacity to think critically and engage with ideas through both written and visual outcomes. Overall, the degree supports the development of versatile, forward-thinking designers equipped to contribute meaningfully to the evolving textile industry.
