COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Politics and International Relations degree at Cardiff Met offers a structured three-year program designed to develop students’ understanding of political systems, international relations, and global and local issues. In the first year, students study foundational topics including social science, political ideologies, everyday politics, argumentation, and global politics, building the critical thinking and analytical skills required for advanced study. The second year focuses on deeper engagement with UK politics, policy making, regional powers, and social research methods, alongside critical theory, with optional modules allowing exploration of global security or political economy. Practical research skills are emphasised to prepare students for real-world analysis and application. In the final year, students explore contemporary issues in the Welsh and international political context through core modules such as scrutiny and the Senedd, interrogating international relations, and undertaking an individual evidence-based project, complemented by a research and employability module. Optional modules in political communication or green political economy allow students to tailor their studies to their interests. Across all levels, the program integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, developing a portfolio of skills including policy analysis, research, and professional communication. Graduates emerge with a critical, research-informed perspective and the practical skills needed to engage meaningfully in politics, international relations, and related professional fields.
