COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Interior Design degree at Cardiff Met is structured to develop creative, technical, and professional skills across three years, preparing students for a career in interior design. In Year One, students focus on foundational design skills through Studio 1.1 and 1.2, learning to visualise and present ideas using sketching, technical drawing, model making, CAD, and verbal presentation. Ethical, social, and sustainability considerations are introduced, alongside academic research skills in Research Basics and collaborative, interdisciplinary problem-solving in Interdisciplinary Understanding. Year Two expands on independent and team-based practice, allowing students to create site-specific projects that consider client and user identities through Studio 2, while engaging with real-world briefs and challenges in 21st Century Challenges and Real-World Contexts. The Research Proposal module prepares students for final-year independent enquiry. The program also offers an optional sandwich year, providing hands-on experience in architectural or design-focused practices to enhance employability. Year Three centres on the Major Project, where students develop, research, and communicate a self-directed design solution, demonstrating innovative thinking and professional competence. Positioning in Practice supports career readiness and reflection on professional development, while the Contribution module enables students to integrate research and practical skills into a comprehensive final submission. Graduates leave equipped to create socially and environmentally responsible interior environments and to pursue careers in design or related industries.
