COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University is structured around a progressive, three-year curriculum that emphasizes critical reading, creative writing, and interdisciplinary connections. In Year 1, students are introduced to foundational texts and concepts. Modules such as “Reading Literature” and “Shakespeare and his Contemporaries” provide a grounding in literary analysis, while “Stories Matter” and “Writing Poetry” focus on developing narrative and poetic techniques. The Connect strand introduces literary theory and performance-based writing, allowing students to explore critical frameworks and engage with diverse audiences.Year 2 encourages imaginative exploration and experimentation. Students study major literary movements in modules like “Romantic and Victorian Literature” and “Modernist Literature and Culture,” while deepening their creative skills through “Urban and Contemporary” and “Ghosts in the Machine,” which focus on innovative and digital storytelling. The Connect modules challenge students to explore speculative fiction in “Imaginary World and Possible Futures” and gain professional experience through “The Professional Critic and Creative: Work Placement.”In Year 3, the emphasis shifts to employability and advanced literary engagement. Students examine contemporary literature and themes of identity in “Hypercontemporary Literature and the Book Prize” and “Narratives of Place and Belonging.” The writing modules “Fact or Artful Enterprise” and “Publishing and Digital Humanities” equip students with industry-relevant skills. For the final Connect strand, students choose either a year-long dissertation or two taught modules: “The Major Project,” which explores social issues through literature and creative work, and “Writing for Wellbeing,” which examines the therapeutic use of writing.
