COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Economics and Finance degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive understanding of economic theory, financial management, and real-world applications. In the first year, students complete six compulsory modules covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, global financial services, economic ideas through time, quantitative methods, and sustainable money management. These modules establish a strong foundation in economic principles, analytical skills, and financial literacy. The second year builds on this knowledge with compulsory modules in intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, money and markets, quantitative methods, and experiential work or volunteering opportunities, alongside one optional module such as financial management, games and information theory, or accounting for responsible management. Students may also choose to undertake a year-long industry placement after the second year, gaining practical experience to enhance employability. In the third year, students study core modules including macroeconomics theory and application, investment management, labour and health economics, and contemporary finance. They select two optional modules from areas such as econometrics, advanced financial management, capital markets, behavioural economics, monetary economics, operationalising strategy, or industrial work experience if undertaking a placement. Across all levels, the program develops critical thinking, quantitative analysis, and strategic financial decision-making skills, preparing graduates for careers in finance, economics, policy, and consultancy, or for further study.
